3. Workplace Health Promotion: Tobacco use Prevention and Cessation 2016-2017
The goal of this workplace health promotion project is to adopt a ‘whole-system’ strategy for a collaborative partnership with the Rhodes University Peer Educators to develop and implement a culturally-sensitive and contextually-appropriate health promotion intervention, through leadership strengthening, on tobacco use for the support staff at Rhodes University. The main activities of this project entails developing health information leaflets, trainer’s manuals and workshops and wellness programmes for the 1500 support staff at Rhodes University. The Wellness Program will encompasses future screening programmes for the support staff at Rhodes University at the Rhodes Health Care Center for promotion of healthy living through regular monitoring of health parameters. The project responds to the epidemic increase of Non-Communicable diseases in South Africa. These effects are aggravated by the low health literacy levels within the lower socio-economic groups in South Africa, which constitutes the majority of the country’s population. The expected results of the project would be to provide a platform to build future leaders in health promotion on campus. Additionally the project aims to promote gender empowerment by focusing on health literacy in a gender-sensitive manner.

4. Faculty of Pharmacy Post Graduate Representative
- Theodore Duxbury was elected Rhodes University Faculty of Pharmacy Postgraduate Representative for 2016- 10 May 2017. This position requires a high level of confidence and maturity in order for him to express the views of his fellow postgraduates. It is his duty to stand forward and represent his peers in matters that not only arise within the Pharmacy Faculty but also on the rest of campus. This leadership position requires him to attend faculty board meetings with university leadership.
- These faculty board meetings expose him to the challenges faced in our University: from controversial issues such as student protests and rape culture, to academic and economic administrative issues. This therefore nurtures his problem solving skills.
- To ensure sustainable academic development, Theodore Duxbury organises weekly seminars encouraging both postgraduates and staff members to attend to listen, engage with, and learn from their peers. These seminars allow presenters to share their research, and obtain constructive feedback, fostering their confidence in their presentation skills and also in their field of work, aiding their professional development.
5. Pharmacy Undergraduate Mentor and Demonstrator
- Theodore Duxbury has extended his role as student leader by serving as a Community Experience Programme facilitator at the Faculty of Pharmacy. This programme provides students with exposure to the real-life situations of public sector patients. The facilitator accompanies students to homes in the rural areas of Grahamstown to provide a healthcare service to the community and to engage with the locals on their current health issues, while students gain work experience. This programme requires one to be professional, culturally sensitive, contextually-appropriate and non-judgmental, while it builds on the Critical Crossfield Outcomes for his mentees, as required by the Council of Higher Education in South Africa. This programme familiarized him with the rural community of Grahamstown and has moulded him into an empathetic, culturally sensitive and responsible healthcare professional.
- Theodore also demonstrate other clinical practical lessons in Pharmacy Practice, where undergraduate students are trained to provide their clinical expertise to healthcare teams and communities in working environments. He also assist lecturers in assessing presentations, written assignments and with other forms of formative assessments to assist undergraduate students. This requires him to analyse and carefully interpret assignments to provide constructive feedback without being judgemental and insensitive to the individual being assessed.
- Theodore also assists as a Pharmacotherapy Demonstrator for the fourth year Pharmacy Students at Settlers Hospital Grahamstown
6. Rhodes University Anglican Society President

This is a student initiative aimed at highlighting the religious practices of Anglicans as well as collaborating with other denominations to promote inclusivity and transformation. Projects encompass both spriritual and recreational activities designed to suit student life. These include organising student services; spiritual camps; recreational movie nights; collaborations with the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown and Christians at Rhodes; inviting guest speakers to engage on gender-based issues; and reaching out to the Grahamstown Community through various Parish visits. The RU An’Soc motto is suggestive of our ethic of including students from all backgrounds, stating “Your home away from home.”
- This position allowed Theodore to serve on governing bodies such as: The Anglican Students’ Federation Committee (Umbrella body of all Eastern Cape Universities’ Anglican Societies); Christians at Rhodes (C@R); the Cathedral of St Michael and St George Students’ Ministry Committee (organising weekly student services). It also enables him to serve as a Parish Councellor for the Cathedral of St Michael and St George; and as Sunday School teacher assisstant to children at the Grahamstown Cathedral.
